I. Music:

The word Folia is Portuguese in origin and refers to a dance, or musical framework in three-time, which originated in the late 15th century.  The word itself means mad or empty headed.  The earliest example of this form of “La Folia” is Gil Vicente(1505). There are so many composere used this setting in their music, such as: D. S. de Badajoz(c1536), Alonso Mudarra (1546), Diego Oritz (1553), Francisco de Salinas (1577), Anon (1593), Mayone (1603), Giovanni M. Trabaci (1603), G. G. Kapsberger (1604), G. Montesardo (1606), Sebastian de Covarrubias (1611), Frescobaldi (1615), Francesco Lambardi (1617), G. Stefani (1622), A. Piccinini (1623), Luis de Briceno (1626), Gonzalo Correa (1626), A. M. Bartolotti (1640), Foscarini (c1640), Corbetta (1643, 1648, 1671, 1674), Falconieri (1650), P. A. Giramo (c1650), B. Storace (1664), Farenelli (1671), Jacques Gallot(1672), Lully (1672), Ximenez (1672), Sanz(1675), Thomas D’Urfey (1682), D’Anglebert(1689), J. P. Fortsch (1690), C. Caresana (1693), Cabanilles (1694), Albicastro (c1700), Corelli (1700), Marais (1701), Vivaldi (1705),  Scarlatti (1715), G. Lambranzi (1716), Tauber (1717), P. Jodelet (1726), Geminiani (1726/7), Matteson (1739), J. S. Bach (1742), M. Yrol (1754), C.P.E. Bach (1776), Gretry (1778), Cherubini (1798), Liszt (1863), Nielson (1906), Rachmaninoff(1934).

It was used by Beethoven too in his Fifth-Symphony where it is quoted in the harmony towards the end of the slow movement---a fact which apparently escaped musicological detection until 1994 when it was recognized by an Open University student Lucy Hayward-Warburton (to be astonishment of her tutor).

The Hyperion Record Co. released 7 CDs about La Folia played by The Purcell Quartet. They are C.P.E. Bach (CDA66239), Corelli(66226), Geminiani(66264), Scarlatti(66254), Vivaldi(66193), and the collection of all 6 La Folia is CDA67035.
